The challenge before Sera
FINKA had identified a 3.5 kg/m² harvest gap worth closing, but testing strategy changes live, mid-season, against an experienced grower's own judgment was effectively a guessing game — any adjustment risked the crop with no structured way to know in advance whether it would help. FINKA needed a data-driven way to find the specific inefficiencies behind the gap, rather than trial and error.
How Sera helps
Sera used a macro-to-micro analytical approach on FINKA's historical tomato cycle data — using Light Use Efficiency as the key indicator, breaking the cycle into five distinct phases, and zooming in on the periods where yield dropped below expectation. The finding: FINKA's misting strategy and screening strategy were misaligned, creating unnecessary plant stress from two directions. In low-radiation periods, a strict Radiation-Temperature Ratio strategy didn't account for humidity buildup, raising internal humidity and reducing transpiration. In high-radiation periods, rapid increases in sunlight combined with a suboptimal misting and screening response caused overheating and stomatal closure, limiting photosynthesis. Sera didn't stop at diagnosis — a real-time alert-monitoring system was put in place to prevent the same inefficiencies going forward, with a trial now tracking plant stress, efficiency, and yield performance in real time.
