+12% production. Not from spending more — from dosing smarter.

Sera showed Gemüsering Böhmer exactly when to inject CO₂ for maximum return, not minimum cost.

Gemüsering Böhmer

About

8-hectare greenhouse in Zorbau, plus a second facility in Schkölen — two greenhouses running a split summer/winter strategy for year-round supply, growing 30+ tomato varieties.

People

Thomas Henniger, Head Grower. Dr. Lukas Scholz, General Manager.

Engagement

Sera Manager, for CO2 dosing strategy optimization.

The challenge before Sera

Rising CO2 costs made dosing strategy a critical decision, especially in winter, when LED lighting creates an opportunity to control CO2 levels with minimal venting losses. The core question — when to dose CO2, and how much — had historically been answered with experience and intuition rather than data, across two greenhouses running different seasonal strategies at once.

How Sera helps

Sera Manager combined a crop model with a physics model of the greenhouse's air exchange and CO2 loss to identify the CO2 concentrations that actually maximize profitability, supported by a two-week forecast from weather predictions and tuned to the specific conditions of the Zorbau greenhouses. Analysis of historical data surfaced a specific, counterintuitive recommendation: instead of cutting CO2 injection to save cost, the data showed where injecting more, strategically, would pay off — specifically in November, February, and March, months with sufficient natural light and minimal venting requirements. Thomas Henniger reviewed and adjusted the strategy week by week based on these recommendations, with decision-making authority staying with the grower throughout — Sera proposed, Henniger decided.

"Thanks to Sera, we can increase production and profitability across our 8-hectare greenhouse in Zorbau. That's what truly matters to us."

— Dr. Lukas Scholz, General Manager, Gemüsering Böhmer

The results
